Social Studies

This course focuses primarily on the history of western civilization from Roman times through the global world of the 1990s. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of European world powers.

This college level FULL YEAR course offers an intensive study of world history, with an emphasis on global societal diversity as well as the story of “how we became us.” The course addresses the nature of global changes, causes and consequences of historic events and human behaviors, and comparisons among global societies. It emphasizes relevant factual knowledge, interpretive thinking, and skills in analyzing historical evidence. Students must take the Advanced Placement Exam to receive the A.P. designation on the transcript and have the additional honor point calculated into the grade point average.

This FULL YEAR course provides the basic foundation of knowledge concerning U.S. history. The first semester offers a broad historical survey of the development of the American nation from the colonial period to the Civil War. The second semester is a historical survey from Reconstruction to post World War II tracing the growth of the U.S. as an emerging modern state. Special focus is placed on the Progressive Era, the New Deal, World War II and Cold War issues.

This FULL YEAR college level course offers an intensive study of American history from the colonial era to post World War II. Emphasis is placed upon the political, economic and social influences that have shaped America. Discussion, writing skills and outside research are stressed.Students must take the Advanced Placement Exam to receive the A.P. designation on the transcript and have the additional honor point calculated into the grade point average.

This course is a study of the American democratic government through the rise of America’s political institutions. The study includes examining government on the federal and state levels. Federal government receives special emphasis, but comparisons between all levels of government are made throughout the course. Current events are integrated throughout the course.

This FULL YEAR college level course offers the student an in-depth study of the functions and operation of national, state and local governments. The course includes a study of the three branches of the national government, political parties, pressure groups and the importance of citizen participation in government.Students must take the Advanced Placement Exam to receive the A.P. designation on the transcript and have the additional honor point calculated into the grade point average.

This course offers the student with a thorough study of economics. The study includes the market economy by examining individual, business and government choices as well as competitive markets, price, supply and demand, and the role of government. The national and international economies are studied with emphasis on economic systems, economic interdependence, and international trade. The final component is personal finance with emphasis on decision-making, budgeting, banking and investment.

This class is a one-semester elective course that explores the role of law in American society. It is intended to provide students with an opportunity to study constitutional law, civil and criminal laws, court procedures, and civil rights in connection to our everyday lives. Throughout the course, students will evaluate the themes of justice and fairness through analyzing cases, current events, and participating in class discussion.

This course offers the student the opportunity to develop critical thought about human behavior by integrating social/biological and psychological perspectives. Course content includes motivation, personality, emotions, the thinking process, learning theory, physical psychology and social psychology.
