Science

DCHS science students will work towards mastering* the key science themes addressed in each course they enroll in while learning how to work collaboratively and to communicate effectively using evidence and logic, while sorting, analyzing, and critiquing information. Development of critical thinking skills and scientific literacy capacity are key focus areas. DCHS science teachers will create appropriate challenges for each student, constantly suggesting ideas and connections to follow. As a result of their experience with the DCHS science department, students are well-prepared for higher level learning as well as bringing their scientific literacy skills to bear on issues that will affect their families and their communities.

*mastery learning defined as: students are able to apply the principles of an area of study to new and unique situations. The students’ ability to do this reflects their depth of learning; not that they have memorized unrelated science facts. Mastery learning is the focus of the DCHS science department.
